The Global Warming Petition Project has been signed by 31,487 scientists who agree with the creators of the petition that global warming is not human-caused. The petition's purpose is to show that, despite claims made by climate change scientists and environmental activists, there is not a true consensus on the science of global warming. While the petition is widely supported by those who do not subscribe to theories of anthropogenic global warming, the project has been declared flawed, fake, and full of misleading claims by climate change supporters and scientists in the pro global warming community.

Shortly after the release of the Global Warming Petition Project, speculation as to the validity of its signatures quickly became an issue in the media. Very early on when the petition only had 17,000 signatures, The New York Times reported, "This petition has long since been recognized in the serious scientific community as a farce, in part because the signatories are listed without titles or affiliations that would permit an assessment of their credentials."

Claiming that the petition was "easily-debunked propaganda," The Huffington Post reported that the "flawed piece of global warming denier propaganda" made false claims as to the qualifications of its signers. According to The Huffington Post, only a questionable .5 percent of signers had any background in climatology or atmospheric science, which made "an already questionable list seem completely insignificant given the nature of scientific endeavor."

In 2014, Moyers & Company, founded by former White House Press Secretary turned journalist Bill Moyers, published an article with the following statement, "Most people who deny that human activity is warming the planet just dismiss a massive body of scientific evidence as a big hoax." The author also criticized the Global Warming Petition noting that, "The petition was supposedly signed by '31,000 American scientists' who opposed the consensus 'entirely on scientific grounds published in peer reviewed journals.' But in fact, anyone could sign on, and according to Michael Mann, director of Penn State’s Earth System Science Center, the list ultimately included the Spice Girls and several Star Wars characters."

Most recently, a letter to The Indianapolis Star quoted atmospheric scientist Eric Grimsrud. Grimsrud examined the list of signatures on the Global Warming Petition and remarked, "How few of the names I recognize as being participants in the field of atmospheric science … almost all of the names I did recognize were individuals whose research area had little or nothing to do with the fields of atmospheric science or climate change."

The Global Warming Petition Project organizers have indicated that any false, duplicate, or otherwise compromised signatures have been removed from the petition upon discovery. The organizers stand by the statement, "All of the listed signers have formal educations in fields of specialization that suitably qualify them to evaluate the research data related to the petition statement."
