Global Warming Definition Differs Across the Globe

By    |   Monday, 27 Oct 2014 04:06 PM

The international community takes a view of global warming that extends beyond a political agenda. As children in other countries learn to define global warming, the emphasis on human involvement is downplayed as only one of many factors leading to climate warming trends.

Climate Change Education, an organization that provides a resource portal for education programs on all seven continents, says the topic of climate change is becoming a subject included in curricula across the globe.

The One UN Climate Change Learning Partnership (UN CC: Learn) provides resource guides to aid in international learning about climate change. It was supported by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Program.

The global warming definition provided by UN CC:Learn says the phenomenon “refers to the global-average temperature increase that has been observed over the last one hundred years or more.” The guide says many politicians and the public believe "the term carries the implication that mankind is responsible for that warming." However, the organization does not explicitly endorse or deny this belief.

The UN CC: Learn resource guide emphasizes other factors contributing to global climate change before human action. It calls human activity just one of the “external forcings” making changes to the climate today. The curriculum points out the complexity of interactions between things happening on land and in the air to bring about climate changes. It also points out that the climate evolves “under the influence of its own internal dynamics."

International educators are encouraged to teach the technical nature of how the climate naturally warms or cools with cloud cover, vegetation, and particles in the air.

UN CC: Learn encourages an understanding of how those things “which are beyond human control, contribute to the highly complex system of the climate and lead to climate patterns.”
The problem/solution based strategy encouraged by U.S. educators is not emphasized.
