Girls With Guns: Mistakes to Avoid When Making Your First Firearm Purchase

By    |   Wednesday, 06 May 2015 10:25 AM

When girls with guns finally decide to make their first firearm purchase, it is an exciting and important step in actively exercising their Second Amendment rights. However, there are some things to avoid if you don't want to suffer from buyer's remorse after such an important purchase.

One of the first things you should do is visit your local range and shoot as many different kinds of guns as possible. Avoiding this important step can result in purchasing a firearm you later dread shooting.

The only way to discover what guns you will like or dislike is by actually firing them. This allows you to become familiar with both revolvers and semi-automatics and the different calibers and find out, through your own experience, the pro's and con's of each.

Once you've decided on a few guns that you like, you'll want to begin doing some thorough research on them. By avoiding doing your own research, you could make a costly investment in a purchase you'll only grow to resent later.

YouTube is a fantastic resource. Many shooters, such as Hickock45 frequently post gun reviews as well as comparison videos. Visit the manufacturer's website for specific details such as size, weight and features.

Not thinking about safe gun storage before you make a firearm purchase is just irresponsible. If you can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on a gun, then surely you can afford the peace of mind of getting a gun safe to go with it. If you cannot afford a safe, you cannot afford a gun. It's as simple as that.

When thinking about your first gun purchase, it's a great idea to start talking to friends about what guns they have and why they like them. They can offer great suggestions about which guns you should try out as rentals at the gun range.

However, it's a bad idea all around to simply go buy a gun because your spouse, friend or LEO neighbor likes the particular one they have.

Lastly, not taking a firearms safety course of some kind either before or with your firearm purchase is doing both yourself and your family a huge disservice. Whether or not your state requires it is irrelevant. You owe it to yourself to learn all that you can about firearms safety, ideally, before you ever bring your first gun home.
