While little is officially known about Calamity Jane, one thing is for sure: her nickname certainly seems to fit what we do know about her. Her love of whiskey, men, and even rumors of prostitution helped contribute to the wild reputation of a woman who did not behave as demurely as was expected in that day and age.

Though she led a wild life, she was said to have had a soft spot for those in need, particularly during the smallpox outbreak of the late 1800's.

Here are a few more facts that girls with guns might be surprised to know about Calamity Jane:

1. Martha Jane Cannary, better known as "Calamity Jane," was born on or around May 1, 1852, in Princeton, Missouri.

2. She was orphaned by age 12.

3. Calamity Jane was believed to have turned to prostitution in her early teens to earn money to support her younger siblings.

4. She dressed, cussed, drank and acted masculine and rebelled against the expected behavior of women of that era. This is where she earned her famed nickname, "Calamity Jane," according to History.com.

5. She delivered mail as a Pony Express rider along one of the most dangerous trails at that time. The biggest threat was attacks by Indian tribes.

6. Calamity Jane worked as a nurse during the 1878 Deadwood, South Dakota Smallpox epidemic. This is where she was known to have shown her softer, more feminine side.

7. She died in a hotel in Terry, South Dakota in 1903 at the age of 51. Some speculate her death was the result of chronic alcoholism.
