Georgia was the eighth most populous state in the United States in 2014 with nearly 10.1 million people living in the Peach State. Here are the six biggest cities in Georgia.

1. Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and the ninth largest city in the nation; the metropolitan area alone has 4.1 million people. The city has a variety of entertainment and attractions, 13 Fortune 500 companies, and the world’s largest airport.

2. Columbus was named one of the 100 Best Communities by Capital One in 2008. With a population of more than 202,000 people, it is the second largest city in Georgia. Columbus prides itself on its quality of people and way of life and boasts a diverse arts district and national military museums.

3. Augusta was the childhood home of both singer James Brown and President Woodrow Wilson. It is the second oldest city in Georgia and has a population of about 197,000. Augusta was recognized as an age-friendly city by the AARP and is known as a “green-friendly” community with a vibrant, historic atmosphere.

4. Macon is home to more than 154,000 people. As the "Song and Soul of the South" — home to singers Little Richard, Otis Redding, and the Allman Brothers — the city prides itself on African-American art, history, culture, and southern food.

5. Savannah, the original capital of Georgia, is known for its historic charm. With a population of more than 142,000, it was named one of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Places in America by USA Weekend and the Best Southern City by Southern Living magazine.

6. Athens is home to not just the University of Georgia, but bands R.E.M. and the B-52s, earning the city Rolling Stone's distinction as the No. 1 College Music Scene in America. The city has a population of about 119,000 and offers a vibrant nightlife and hip shops.
