Fish Tales: Record-Size Catches in Iowa

By    |   Friday, 12 Feb 2016 02:17 PM

With some 247,000-plus licensed anglers in Iowa, the state's residents are not only passionate about fishing, but also competitive when it comes hooking really big fish. A simple online search brings up numerous online communities devoted to chatting about tales of monster catfish and largemouth bass and whether a new record has been set.

Some Iowa fishing records have been standing for more than half a century, including the catfish record. That record was set back in June 1958 by Joe Baze, who hooked the monster flathead catfish weighing in at 81 pounds and measuring 52 inches in length in Lake Ellis.

Largemouth bass are another popular fish to catch in Iowa and the largest one ever caught was by Patricia Zaerr in May 1984 in Lake Fisher, which is a small lake in southeast Iowa that is only 100 acres in size. The fish weighed 10 pounds, 14 ounces, and measured 23.5 inches in length.

According to Game & Fish magazine, which wrote an article about setting bass fishing records in Iowa, smaller bodies of water can actually provide anglers with an easier shot at catching a giant fish than a larger lake. "Discreet small ponds and lakes with healthy populations of shad, bluegills, and crappies can often house a respectable number of monster largemouth bass," the magazine said.

Other state record-holding big fish hooked in Iowa include a 52-inch long muskie, which measured 50 pounds, 6 ounces and was caught by Kevin Cardwell in Spirit Lake in August 2000; a 45-inch-long northern pike, caught by Allen Forsberg in West Okoboji Lake back in February 1977 that weighed 25 pounds, 5 ounces; and a 107-pound paddlefish that was caught in the Missouri River by Robert Pranschke back in March 1981.

By comparison, the national paddlefish record is held by Missouri man who reeled in a fish that weighed 140 pounds, 9 ounces at Table Rock Lake in Missouri in March.
