Fishing in Florida: Online Resources and Mobile Apps to Enhance the Experience

By    |   Tuesday, 17 Nov 2015 05:16 PM

Florida enjoys long coastline wrapping most of the state's periphery, and is crisscrossed with rivers, streams and swamps as well, and of course that means plenty of opportunity for fishing.

The state, as well as a number of private entrepreneurs, are doing what they can to make angling, casting, trolling, spearing, and what have you easy as possible for contemporary fin chasers, who are more likely to be blessed with GPS hookups than the old-fashioned sailors "weather eye."

So, keep your smartphones, tablets and laptops charged up and out of the sprays and you'll be able to use these apps to help you get the fish into trouble, while keeping yourself out of it.

Getting Legal
You can buy your fishing (or hunting) license online at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's website.

Buy Your License Directly From Your Android Phone
The FFWCC's phone app lets you buy your license, check regulations, bring up copies of your licenses if necessary, and access "geo-locating tools." The app is free, but the licenses are not.

Report Lionfish
Lionfish are an invasive species that Florida encourages everyone to catch as many as possible of, and to report catches or sightings. You can file your lionfish report online or using the iPhone or android apps.

Find Your Way
Navionics provides charts, fishfinder apps, and more online, via Garmin devices and plotters, and for a variety of smartphones.

The NOAA's Ocean Service
This service provides a wealth of information for boaters and surf fisherman on its website, with PDF charts available at no cost, and BSB formatted charts downloadable for input to charting devices, and more advanced formats for ECDIS systems.

The Ocean Service Offers Mobile Apps
The service has lots of them, including fish finder, weather, educational, and apps for both Android and iPhone. There's even one specific to Florida state beaches and parks.
