Besides keeping your internal equipment operating smoothly, fiber has a multitude of health benefits. Here are eight fantastic attributes of fiber and how it helps your health:

1. Colon cancer prevention. Because fiber helps to move waste through your digestive tract and colon, it’s an important tool for keeping your colon clean, healthy, and cancer-free.

2. Heart disease prevention. A high-fiber diet is plant-based, low in calories, and cholesterol-free. Eating high-fiber foods keeps you from eating the high-calorie, fatty foods that can lead to clogged arteries, obesity, and heart disease, says WebMD.

3. Lower cholesterol. Fiber-rich foods have the effect of lowering LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, levels, helping lower the risk of heart disease, according to the American Heart Association. Soluble fiber is typically connected to cholesterol, but studies have linked both soluble and insoluble fiber found in apples, pears, and carrots to lower rates of heart disease.

4. Lower blood pressure. Eating a fiber-rich diet has been shown to help people keep their blood pressure under control. Researchers conducted 25 studies and found a diet in high fiber foods significantly reduced blood pressure levels among those with high blood pressure or hypertension, according to WebMD.

5. Improved blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that fiber helps reduce blood glucose levels in people with diabetes. Soluble fiber in particular can slow the absorption of sugar and help improve blood sugar levels. The Mayo Clinic finds that a diet rich in insoluble fiber may also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

6. Reduced inflammation. According to Arthritis Today, studies have shown fiber appears to lower C-reactive protein, which can indicate inflammation found in the blood. High CRP levels can indicate general inflammation, signaling anything from an infection to rheumatoid arthritis to heart disease.

7. Weight loss. Fiber is an effective weight loss tool because it creates a fullness in your digestive tract, reducing hunger pangs and leading you to eat less. Plus, high-fiber foods tend to be lower in calories, they take longer to eat, and if you’re filling up on fiber, you’re likely to eat less junk that can pack on the pounds.
