Esomeprazole magnesium, also known as Nexium, is used to treat acid reflux and other gastrointestinal issues. It belongs to the class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors.

When taking esomeprazole magnesium, the generic form of Nexium, it is important for a patient to beware of certain risks and problems of the drug. Minor side effects like diarrhea, headaches, nausea, and stomach gas have been reported. Some patients may experience allergic reactions or more adverse responses to the drug.

Here are three risks and problems associated with esomeprazole magnesium:

1. Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors can increase the risk of a heart attack. According to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE, “people who take the medication to suppress the release of stomach acid are 16 percent to 21 percent more likely to suffer myocardial infarction.”

2. Proton pump inhibitors including esomeprazole magnesium can cause a Vitamin B-12 deficiency, which may lead to a variety of issues including sore tongue and weakness or numbness in extremities, says LiveStrong. Vitamin B-12 is attached to protein in food, which is broken down by hydrochloric acid in the stomach. When Nexium or other proton pump inhibitors are in the stomach, the secretion of the acid is decreased and the B-12 is not absorbed in the body.

3. Nexium or esomeprazole magnesium may increase the probability of osteoporosis. Nexium works to treat reflux by decreasing stomach acid, but decreasing stomach acid can lead to less calcium absorbed by the body, according to U.S. News & World Report. Rates of bone fractures vary by the amount of time patients were on the drug containing esomeprazole magnesium.

Talk to your doctor about esomeprazole magnesium to discuss if the risks and benefits are appropriate for your condition.
