5 Foods and Drinks to Avoid While Suffering an Enlarged Prostate

By    |   Monday, 04 Apr 2016 02:56 PM

More than half of men over the age of 60 will develop an enlarged prostate gland, so it is helpful to know these foods and drinks to avoid for a healthy prostate.

1. Refined sugar and flour
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate is caused by hormonal changes that occur as men age. Skipping commercially prepared desserts, baked goods, refined sugar, and white bread can help alleviate these hormonal changes.

2. Caffeine and alcoholic beverages
These drinks can stimulate increased urine production, says the Mayo Clinic. This can irritate the bladder and make symptoms of enlarged prostate worse.

3. Hydrogenated fats and trans fats
Harvard Health Publications suggests eliminating these types of fats, found mostly in highly processed, packaged foods, and fast foods, from the diet. Instead, they recommend healthy fats like those found in nuts, olive oil, and avocados.

4. Sodium
Excess salt is commonly found in canned, processed, and fast food. Harvard Health Publications recommends limiting salt intake and reading nutrition labels on packaged foods.

5. Red meat and processed meats
Red meats include beef, pork, goat, and lamb. Processed meats such as hot dogs, bologna, and packaged lunch meats should also be avoided, says Harvard Health Publications. Poultry, eggs, and fish are smarter protein sources.

Besides these specific foods to avoid with an enlarged prostate gland, Harvard recommends an overall healthy pattern of eating with small portion sizes combined with regular exercise, since researchers have determined that physically active men who maintain a healthy weight are far less likely to suffer from BPH.

The University of Maryland recommends limiting overall fluid intake to no more than about two quarts per day, since excess fluids make the urinary symptoms of enlarged prostate worse. They recommend avoiding beverages in the evening after dinner to help relieve the frequent nighttime urination commonly associated with BPH.
