Top 5 Employers in Mississippi: Which Companies Have the Most Jobs?

There are some vibrant employers in Mississippi, even though the state ranks 50th among America’s state economies. According to Business Insider, it ranks at the bottom in unemployment rate, average annual wages, and gross domestic product per capita and personal consumption.

But the good news is these leading six employers in Mississippi offer job opportunities to tens of thousands of residents in the Magnolia State:

1. University of Mississippi Medical Center

The medical center in Jackson is the largest employer in Mississippi, employing more than 9,500 staff, according to Career One Stop.

University of Mississippi Medical Center reports that its five hospitals and physicians’ clinics combine to serve over 800,000 patients across the state each year.

2. Nissan North America Inc.

Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi, production plant is one of three such plants in America. Nissan’s Canton vehicle assembly plant employs 6,300 staff who produce 450,000 vehicles each year, according to Nissan North America’s website.

The manufacturing plant opened in May 2003 and builds the Nissan Titan, Nissan Armada, Nissan Altima and NV utility and passenger vans.

3. North Mississippi Medical Center

Approximately 5,000 doctors, nurses and other employees call the Tupelo-headquartered medical center their employment home. The regional health care organization services 24 counties in northwest Alabama and north Mississippi.

4. Beau Rivage Resort & Casino

The entertainment complex in Biloxi has approximately 4,000 employees on staff. The casino thrives in large measure due to its location, according to the Beau Rivage website.

Opening in 1999, the resort and casino is within an hour's drive of New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., and is located about 15 miles from the Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport.

5. Mississippi State University

Located in Starkville, the state’s largest public university employs 4,000 faculty, administrators and a variety of other staff, according to the MSU website. It was founded in 1878 by the Mississippi state legislature.
