One of the largest manufacturers and employers in Michigan – the automobile industry – is healthier today than it’s been in many years, but the state is beginning to move away from the days where images of the state and the car were so synonymous. That bond likely will never be broken, but Michigan these days is diversifying for the future and companies in the state are offering plenty of jobs for prospective employees.

As Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder wrote in 2013, “Just as the auto industry has undergone a massive restructuring, Michigan has taken dramatic steps to reinvent itself. [It’s become] a top 10 business tax climate state and one of the fastest growing economies in the nation.” Here are five of the top employers in Michigan in no particular order:

VOTE NOW: Is Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder Doing a Good Job?

1. Ford, General Motors, Chrysler

The auto industry, of course, still supplies plenty of jobs for the state. And though the country needed to help much of the industry out of near failure last decade, President Barack Obama said in January 2015 the automobile industry has added 500,000 jobs in the past five years.

2. University of Michigan

One of the oldest public universities in the country, established in 1817, the school is also one of the state’s largest employers. The university’s health system also plays a large part in the job growth. “We should continue to see overall growth in our system,” University of Michigan human resources senior director Tim Wood told the Ann Arbor News in 2013. “We have the academic mission, research mission, and patient care mission. Research and patient care is where we see growth year to year because we’re adding continual support there.”

3. Health Care Jobs

VOTE NOW: Should the Government Be Doing More to Promote Tourism in America?

According to this One Career Stop list, the vast majority of top employers in Michigan are either hospitals or hospital systems. One of the most valuable positions is that of nurse practitioner. "They have a master's degree and have additional responsibilities, like the ability to prescribe medication," Amy Cell, talent chief for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, told the Free Press in January 2015. "They are a cost-effective way to deliver primary care. With the continued changes in health care delivery, they will play a key role."

4. Con-Way Freight

The trucking company is scheduled to train and hire dozens of new drivers in 2015, and it’s launching its own driving school. According to the Detroit Free Press, the company also gave “significant” raises to its drivers in June 2014, and it planned to repeat the process in January 2015.

5. Temporary Jobs

Michigan has made a nice economic recovery as the jobless rate has dropped to 6.3 percent, but much of those newly won jobs aren’t necessarily the permanent kind. According to the Detroit Free Press, 36 percent of the state’s job gains from 2009 through 2013 were due to temporary staffing and self-employment. As the newspaper writes, “The implementation of the Affordable Care Act is hastening the trend, making it easier for people to purchase health care insurance on their own and enticing companies to use temporary staffing agencies to fill positions so they can avoid insurance mandates.”
