Top 5 Employers in Iowa: Which Companies Have the Most Jobs?

With a 4.5 percent unemployment rate, Iowa currently has one of the strongest state economies in America. Business employers large and small have made the Hawkeye State one of the Top 10 states for job creation, according to Gallup.

Below is a list of the five largest private employers in Iowa, ranked by Infogroup. Medical service providers dominate the top five along with a financial services corporation and a defense and aerospace firm. 

1. Genesis Medical Center

Located in Davenport, Genesis provides jobs for 9,000 employees. The health-care system serves the Quad Cities metropolitan area as well as 10 counties in Iowa and Illinois. Genesis reported it has been named one of the Top 100 health systems in the U.S. and is renowned for its research and clinical work.

2. Rockwell Collins

Headquartered in Cedar Rapids, Rockwell Collins supplies jobs for 7,000 employees in Iowa and 20,000 employees globally. Rockwell Collins is a leader in aerospace and defense, creating aviation electronics systems and products as well as communication solutions for the military and commercial aircraft, the company website said. Its global service and support network stretches across 27 countries.

3. Principal Financial Group

Iowa’s capital city of Des Moines hosts the corporate headquarters for this leading global financial company. The Principal employs 6,300 workers at its headquarters, which oversees more than 250 regional locations across the world, including individual, investment, and retirement offices.

4. Blank Children’s Hospital

Another large non-profit hospital in Des Moines, Blank employs 6,000 medical personnel and staff. Affiliated with UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, Blank Children’s Hospital furnishes comprehensive pediatric care for young patients.

5. Mercy Medical Center

A total of 7,100 employees, plus over 800 doctors and allied health associates, work for the non-profit Catholic hospital that covers three campuses in Des Moines, according to the Mercy Medical Center website. The medical center was founded in 1893 by the Sisters of Mercy and is a leading referral center in America’s Heartland thanks to the range of specialty services it offers. Mercy is part of Mercy Health Network as well as Catholic Health Initiatives, a faith-based system.
