It’s always tempting to sneak food to your dog under the table, or even spoil him occasionally with meals made of people food, but experts caution that your pet’s health can be jeopardized by feeding him the wrong human foods.

An occasional treat of cooked, lean meats and fish, as well as many fruits, can be a good thing for your dog. But beware of the following foods, all of which can cause health problems in your pet:

Latest: Tell Us About Your Pets! Which Do You Have?

• Grapes and raisins – grapes contain a toxin that can kill dogs. It can cause liver and kidney damage.

• Avocados – This fruit contains persin, which can make your dog sick. Keep in mind that persin is in the leaves on the plant, so keep your dog away if you’re growing avocados too.

• Onions and garlic – These favorite food flavorings harm a dog’s red blood cells, which can cause anemia. Don't feed your dog these in any form, including powder, dehydrated, and raw.

• Caffeine – In large amounts, this stimulant can kill dogs. Watch energy drinks that contain large amounts, and remember that caffeine can also be found in medicines, chocolate, and soda, along with the tea and coffee. Web MD noted "there is no antidote."

Tell Us: Buying or Adopting? How Did You Get Your Pets?

• Macadamia nuts – It doesn’t take many of these nuts (as few as six raw or roasted) to make a dog sick. If the dogs eats chocolate with the macadamia nuts, it’s even worse, and it can possibly kill your pet.

• Milk – While drinking milk won’t usually kill a dog, it can make your pet sick. Dogs don’t have the enzymes needed to break down the sugars found in milk.

• Yeast dough – Small quantities of cooked bread are OK for dogs, but letting your pet get ahold of raw yeast dough can be harmful, Food Beast said. The yeast ferments in your dog’s stomach, creating gas that can “lead to severe pain and a potentially ruptured stomach or intestinal tract,” Food Beast said.
