The average dog sleeps about 14 hours a day, according to petplace.com, so it’s important for owners to provide a good bed for their faithful pet.

Here are five of the best-known types of pet beds available on the market to accommodate dogs of varying sizes, sleeping habits, and health needs:

1. Standard dog beds look like cushions or pillows and do not have edges or rims, according to dogs.about.com. The site said they are available in many shapes, sizes, materials, and colors, with shapes that typically include round, oval, rectangular, and square.

Dogswoofs.com said of standard beds, "They may not offer much support but can be a great option for first-time dog owners who do not want to fuss much."

2. Nesting beds are similar to standard dog beds but have raised edges, which cover either the whole bed or a part of it, according to dogswoofs.com. Smaller puppies feel secure in nesting beds, the site said.

3. Orthopedic beds are special kinds of beds designed for dogs suffering from arthritis or other kinds of joint problems, according to thepetinfo.com. It said such beds — which come in various shapes, sizes, and colors — are made of thick foam meant to provide extra support to the pet’s body and put less stress on the joints.

4. Donut beds are much like nesting beds in that they have a raised edge around the bed, which is soft as a pillow and allow the dog to curl up inside, according to thepetinfo.com. It said donut beds are among the most popular sleeping spaces for small dogs.

5. Covered or "hooded" dog beds have the appearance of small houses or tents and provide a small plush retreat for dogs, according to dogs.about.com. According to the website: "Some covered beds are made entirely of plush bedding, while others consist of a standard dog bed inside a rigid house or wicker basket."
