Dick's Sporting Goods Guns: 7 Types of Guns You Can and Cannot Buy

By    |   Thursday, 08 Jan 2015 09:51 PM

It’s the literal truth: Dick’s Sporting Goods has stuck to its guns in eliminating the sale of certain firearms in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut, mass shooing tragedy, which marked its second anniversary on Dec. 14, 2014.

The question for gun enthusiasts remains which guns they can and cannot buy at any of the retailer's 500 stores. Here is a list of seven guns and gun supplies, five of which you can still get at Dick's locations.

1. Troy Carbine:
This modern sporting rifle was sold by Troy Industries under an exclusive arrangement with Dick’s Sporting Goods. During the Christmas 2012 season, Dick’s backpedaled on its Black Friday special on the Troy Carbine and negated all prospective sales of the gun.

A frustrated Stephen Troy, the CEO and founder, said in an official statement that “The current ill will could have been avoided had Dick’s Sporting Goods not terminated modern sporting rifle sales.”

2. .22 rimfire rifles: If you go to the Dick’s website, you’ll see 15 models to choose from, manufactured by companies such as Marlin, Remington, Savage and Mossberg. With rimfire rifles, the gun’s firing strikes and crushes the base's rim to ignite the primer.

3. AR-pattern semiautomatic rifles: Dick’s no longer sells these modern sporting rifles, which resemble the M-16 military rifle. As a semiautomatic, one round is released with each trigger pull. An AR-15 was used at Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting spree.

4. Big-game shotguns:
Dick’s still carries five models of these rifles, three of which are slug guns. Manufacturers include Remington, Savage, Mossberg, and Maverick.

5. Handgun and shotgun ammunition:
Dick’s still stocks ammunition for these firearms, and the selection remains comparable to what you’d find at other sporting goods stores.

6. Youth rifles and shotguns:
Youth guns could have created a controversy, given that the victims of the Newtown incident were young. But the guns remain in stock at Dick’s, the top price being $650 for a Remington 11-87.

7. Black powder rifles: Nearly all the stock in this category at Dick’s comes from the CVA and Traditions lines.
