Gun laws and the interstate transportation of handguns vary greatly from state to state and sometimes cities. For instance, gun laws in the city of Denver, may be somewhat different from the rest of Colorado.

What may be lawful in one state may be unlawful in another including, but not limited to, the ability to lawfully carry a handgun either openly or concealed, with or without a permit, loaded or unloaded.

The allowance for carrying a handgun in a vehicle will also be different depending if a person has a permit honored in that state.

In Colorado, valid out-of-state permits or licenses to possess or carry a handgun is valid for carrying a concealed handgun for the following 22 states which also have reciprocity with Colorado: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

In addition, Colorado only honors resident permits, meaning you reside in the state that issued the permit.

The term "reciprocity" means there is a mutual recognition between the two states to recognize each others permits. Although the permit allows the holder to carry a concealed weapon in Colorado, the visiting permit holder will still be subject to the same laws and restrictions in the same manner that a Colorado permit holder must comply with the laws of the state.

This includes being familiar with prohibited carry locations, and specific local laws and ordinances, specifically to banned firearms in the city of Denver.

Specific to a motor vehicle, a visitor in Colorado that does not have a permit which is valid in Colorado may carry a handgun in a vehicle, and it shall not be considered concealed if the handgun is in the possession of a person who is in a private automobile who is carrying the handgun for legal use, including self-defense.

Denver did win a court case stating that it can control Open Carry in Denver and that is Open Carry is illegal in Denver, although it may be allowed in other areas in the State.
