Whether it’s hunting, fishing or trapping, Delaware is an all-season sportsman’s paradise. But if you are looking for the most options, it’s advised to take advantage of the numerous game seasons during the Delaware winter months. Just remember to check actual dates with the state’s Department of Natural Resources website, as they are bound to change from year to year.

1. Whitetail Deer
About 10 percent of the state of Delaware is considered state-owned land, which makes it open to public hunting. Hunters have been flocking to Delaware since 1954 to take advantage of the hunting opportunities of deer, as the region is considered to be one of the prime areas for deer hunting. As habitat loss continues and the deer population rises, hunting is the state’s way to manage a healthy, viable herd.

There are two types of deer season: firearm and archery. Firearm season typically runs from the middle of November to the middle of January. Archery season runs longer, from the beginning of September to the end of January. A special handgun season takes place for one week only during January.

2. Snow Geese
Snow geese season runs from the middle of December to the end of March each year. Hunters take advantage of the long season, enjoying less mud and warmer temps, bagging birds from seven to 10 pounds.

3. Cottontail Rabbit
Hunters can take as many as four rabbits during rabbit season, which usually runs from the end of November to the end of February. Keep in mind if you are hunting rabbit, you are required to meet the state regulation of wearing at least 400 square inches of orange material on your head, chest and back. The requirement exists as a safety measure as rabbit season runs into part of firearm deer season.

4. Male Ring-Necked Pheasants
From the end of November to the beginning of February hunters can take aim at these birds. The same orange material requirement that applies to rabbit hunters also applies to pheasant hunters.
