Throughout the mid- to late 1990s, children learned the wonders of science by watching William Sanford Nye’s popular science-themed show on TV. More recently, the popular media personality has attempted to use his celebrity and define global warming to a much broader audience.

ALERT: Is Global Warming a Hoax? Vote Now

Nye, who helmed “Bill Nye, the Science Guy” on PBS from 1993-98, has spoken at a variety of venues throughout 2014. In addition to serving as a children’s personality, Nye’s professional background includes mechanical engineering. He unabashedly believes climate change is a real problem and is advocating for policies aimed at bringing solutions to the issue.

In February 2014, Nye debated climate change and global warming with Tennessee Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn on “Meet the Press.” In a commentary in The Washington Post, survey research analyst Scott Clement said Nye’s appearance is a realization “how much the scientific community has failed to communicate their message on global climate change.”

“We need you to change things, not deny what’s happening,” Nye said to Blackburn during the well-publicized debate. He provided a number of facts and figures in an attempt at backing up his statements. For example, he pointed to a NASA report that asserted 97 percent of climate scientists agree global warming trends are likely due to such human activities as greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to ensuring future generations can be privy to a cleaner environment, Nye has stated he believes there are other incentives — including economic ones — for countries to invest now in new technology.

VOTE NOW: Are You Concerned About Global Warming?

“For me, as a guy who grew up in the U.S., I want the U.S. to lead the world in this,” Nye said during the “Meet the Press” debate. “These are huge opportunities, and the more we mess around with this denial, the less we’re going to get done.”

Nye’s sense of urgency in his attempts to define global warming follow the logic of many Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California.
