The state of Connecticut was among several states to adopt tougher gun control laws in 2013 after the Sandy Hook school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The new laws restrict the sale and permitting of assault rifles and handguns after 20-year old Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 elementary school students and six teachers in the deadliest K-12 school shooting in U.S. history.

The Connecticut laws addressed mental health and school security in addition to gun control measures and were touted as a model for bipartisan cooperation in statehouses nationwide, leading to speculation that Connecticut’s laws would lead to a spate of similar measures across the country.

Public support for gun restrictions also rose after Sandy Hook, with 91 percent of voters surveyed by Quinnipiac University two months after the shooting saying they favored universal background checks.

The dramatic shift in public opinion prompted some gun supporters to allege the shooting was a government conspiracy aimed at curbing gun access in the U.S.

But the Sandy Hook massacre did not lead to a wave of gun control measures after all.

In fact, more states ended up passing laws easing gun control rather than restricting it in the wake of the shooting. The New Yorker reported in April 2013 that federal gun control measures proposed in the wake of the mass shooting sparked a backlash among state lawmakers seeking to reinforce Second Amendment rights.

And in Washington, D.C., bipartisan legislation expanding background checks and banning the sale of certain semi-automatic weapons failed to win U.S. Senate approval in April 2013, the same month Connecticut passed its more restrictive gun law.
