Where Can You Find the Confederate Flag Flying in Louisiana?

In Louisiana, Confederate flags can still be found on state-issued license plates, although Gov. Bobby Jindal said the legislature may consider the issue when it reconvenes.

The Louisiana state National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had written and asked Jindal and the Louisiana government to take the Confederate flag off license plates, The Times-Picayune reported. The organization said it was a "symbol of hate – only used by the most radical among us to divide our state."

Vote Now: Should the Confederate Flag Be Removed From All Government Buildings?

As divisive arguments about the Confederate flag heated up nationwide, residents in various parts of Louisiana demanded that statues honoring Confederate war figures be moved. In Shreveport, a statue at the Caddo Parish Courthouse of depicts four generals of the Confederacy and a Confederate soldier, USA Today said. The Shreveport NAACP asked that it be moved.

"We shouldn't have a statue like that in a place where people have to walk by it on their way to plead a case or face a judge," NAACP President Lloyd Thompson told USA Today.

Others protested four monuments in New Orleans that honor the Confederate war. In August, two governmental groups in Shreveport voted to remove the statues, but Jindal is looking for a way to block the decision, NBC News said.

"This is about more than the men represented in these statues. This discussion is about whether these monuments, built to reinforce the false valor of a war fought over slavery, ever really belonged in a city as great as New Orleans whose lifeblood flows from our diversity and inclusiveness," NBC quoted Mayor Mitch Landrieu from a release. "Supremacy may be a part of our past, but it should not be part of our future."

However, Jindal’s communication director told NBC, "Governor Jindal opposes the tearing down of these historical statues and he has instructed his staff to determine the legal authority he has as Governor to stop it."

Angry over the flag flap, one Louisiana man had a ISIL flag cake made by an unsuspecting Walmart bakery, which had previously turned away a Confederate flag cake request, ABC News reported. The incident, which went viral, drew an apology from the retailer, which has banned Confederate merchandise in its thousands of stores nationwide.
