Where Can You Find the Confederate Flag Flying in Iowa?

The escalating controversy surrounding the Confederate flag reached Iowa, when three flags decorating a Republican float in a county parade caused disagreement within the party.

In July, an Iowa Republican float in a Marion County parade featured three Confederate flags, meant to represent three Confederate soldiers buried in the county, The Gazette reported.

Vote Now: Should the Confederate Flag Be Removed From All Government Buildings?

Although the Republican county co-chairwoman spoke with the owner of the truck pulling the float, who was flying the flags in part as representation of his membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization, because she did not think the flags should be flown. But ultimately she decided it was within his free-speech rights to fly the flags, the Gazette said.

After many people were upset about the Confederate flags, the Iowa Republican party decided that in the future, such divisive issues should not be addressed in the official float for the party, but in individual floats as the person desires, the newspaper said.

Many Confederate flags are still flown on private property in Iowa, and the Des Moines Register reported that flag sellers have seen a spike in sales since the national debate arose after a shooting at a black South Carolina church left nine dead.

As South Carolina debated removing the Confederate flag from its statehouse grounds, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad declined to weigh in on the issue, telling reporters he believes it is up to each state to decide, the Register said.

Not all Iowans are willing to stay out of the debate. The Iowa Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans advertised in August that the organization would discuss the Confederate battle flag controversy at its September meeting.

"The Confederate flag stands for history, heritage, and genuine pride in our ancestors and in our Southland," the group's website said. "We are the rightful heirs to this soldier’s flag and we wish to maintain the right to honor our families and their heroes."

KCCI in Des Moines reported that some businesses were impacted by decisions about display of the Confederate flag too. After Walmart announced that it would no longer sell items with the flag on them, an Iowa ice company had to change all of its packaging to continue selling in the national chain.

Crawford Ice Co.'s logo has featured a cartoon character holding a Confederate flag for the 40 years the company has been in business, KCCI said.
