Which American Cities Are Behind Cities for Citizenship?

By    |   Monday, 28 Sep 2015 11:34 PM

Cities for Citizenship is an urban program where large American metropolitan areas conduct workshops to get permanent immigrants registered locally as legal American citizens.

By providing counseling, immigrants enlisted in the program receive education in both legal and fiscal matters. After receiving counseling, the program’s goal is to eventually register the participants as tax-paying citizens and assimilate them into American society.

Currently, mayors of three of America’s largest cities founded the Cities for Citizenship program and serve as chairs: Mayors Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Rahm Emanuel of Chicago, and Bill de Blasio of New York City.

Within a year of its 2014 inception, the three cities grew into more than a dozen, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chattanooga, Denver, Nashville, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, the San Francisco Bay area, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

“We look forward to working with Cities for Citizenship as we establish programs to distribute relevant information that welcomes immigrants and eases their path to citizenship,” said Reading, Pennsylvania, Mayor Vaughn D. Spencer in a statement released by Cities for Citizenship.

“We are thrilled by the rapid growth of Cities for Citizenship,” said Director of Immigrant Rights and Racial Justice Policy at the Center for Popular Democracy Shena Elrington.

“Now, more than ever, cities are demonstrating their commitment to promoting citizenship and building inclusive cities. Our growth means that cities across the country, big and small, are taking action to unleash the value of citizenship.”

Among the many supporters of Cities for Citizenship, Citigroup has been a large supporter to the group chipping in $1.1 million contribution to the foundation in the past, according to the Chicago Tribune.
