The 10 Most Conservative Baptist Colleges in America

By    |   Thursday, 07 May 2015 10:16 AM

It will come as no surprise to most people that Baptist colleges and universities are numbered among the most conservative denominational schools in the United States. Perusing their websites will lead you to statements of doctrinal purity, often repeated verbatim at various institutions, and occasional prohibitions of dancing, along with restrictions on listening to music or viewing films.

This list focuses on colleges that hew to traditional Baptist doctrine, and which make the denomination's specific spiritual structures an underpinning of the educational process.

1. Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina
Promises "relevant and challenging chapel services, faculty and staff who model Christlikeness and mentor students, and an entire curriculum infused with biblical truth." As noted in an article on religious accommodations laws in the Christian Science Monitor, Bob Jones once asked for an exemption from anti-discrimination laws, claiming a biblical foundation for its prohibition of interracial dating. It lost.

2. Baylor University, Waco, Texas
Although it is formally associated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, Baylor does not require students, or even faculty, to be Baptists. Its website notes that many faculty are of different Christian, sects as well as Jews, Buddhists, and even atheists. The school's philosophy is based on Christian biblical tradition. The university does not make any overt political or economic statements on its website, but, as noted in an Atlantic Monthly article, Rand Paul attended; a comic book exploring his background featured a college prank he indulged in while a student at Baylor.

3. Ambassador Baptist College, Lattimore, North Carolina

Believes in "the verbal, plenary inspiration of the Old and New Testaments ... in the preservation of God’s Word through the Hebrew Masoretic Text and the Greek Textus Receptus," the bodily resurrection of Christ, and the "reality of Heaven and Hell."

4. Boston Baptist College, Boston, Massachusetts
This college, and the next two on the list employ identical wordings in their vision statements, and are rooted in religious fundamentalism: "We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men supernaturally inspired; that it has truth without any admixture of error for its matter; and therefore is, and shall remain to the end of the age, the only complete and final revelation of the will of God to man."

5. Baptist Bible College, Springfield, Missouri
"We believe the Holy Bible was written by men supernaturally inspired; that it has truth without any admixture of error for its matter; and therefore is, and shall remain to the end of the age, the only complete and final revelation of the will of God to man," the school says.

6. Heartland Baptist Bible College, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
"We believe the Holy Bible was written by men supernaturally inspired; that it has truth without any admixture of error for its matter; and therefore is, and shall remain to the end of the age, the only complete and final revelation of the will of God to man," according to the college.

7. Louisiana Baptist University and Theological Seminary, Shreveport, Louisiana
LBU's mission statement explicitly abjures humanism, although it doesn't mention particular Baptist dogma: "We do not strive to pattern our institution after the humanistic, shifting systems of secular education. It is the goal of LBU/LBTS that in everything we do we exalt the Name of Jesus Christ."

8. Indiana Baptist College, Greenwood, Indiana

The college is proud to be "rooted in our strong commitment to the Bible, sound doctrine, the Baptist distinctives, personal and ecclesiastical separation, conservative music, and personal evangelism."

9. Golden State Baptist College, Santa Clara, California
The college says that the "Scriptures are inerrant, infallible, and God-breathed; and therefore, are the final authority for faith and life."

10. Oklahoma Baptist University
The college's "purpose statement" emphasizes its biblical roots and its position within the Baptist religious community. A highly-ranked liberal arts school, it is the least conservative on this list.
