Will Vintage and Classic Cars Become Illegal Because of Global Warming Legislation?

Americans may still legally drive vehicles built without a catalytic converter, or tailpipes that meet current exhaust standards. But legislation proposed as part of the debate over cars and global warming threatens to essentially outlaw classic and vintage cars by banning some of their components in the name of climate change.

Automotive columnist Eric Peters wrote in the American Spectator in June 2014 that the continued existence of older cars is threatened by suggestions that lawmakers require vehicles built before catalytic converters and fuel injection to meet current emissions standards, or the lawmakers impose a carbon tax on the emissions of such cars. Price wrote: “Proposals along these lines have already been floated in California — and California is the birthplace of many beasts, who inevitably slouch eastward.”

California lawmakers last year imposed a first-of-its-kind climate change law imposing a carbon tax on all gasoline purchases to take effect beginning Jan. 1, 2015.

Peters wrote that past efforts by environmentalists to enact laws threatening the existence of vintage and classic cars have tended to die amid opposition from old car hobbyists and the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association, which he described as “the old car/aftermarket car parts equivalent of the NRA (National Rifle Association).”

SEMA’s website says it opposes any legislation that imposes an added fee, surcharge or tax on the sale or lease of a new passenger motor vehicle based on carbon emissions, engine size or fuel-economy rating. SEMA also opposes added yearly registration and renewal fees based on carbon emissions, engine size or fuel-economy rating, its website said.

Still, Peters stressed that America’s old car hobbyists are increasingly aging and graying, while their children and grandchildren either don’t have the money to own cars as a hobby or aren’t interested in using them other than as appliances. Those changing demographics, he contended, will make it much easier for environmentalists to convince lawmakers to approve bans on components of classic and vintage cars, effectively outlawing older cars they consider to be unsafe or unfriendly to the environment.
