Cars and Global Warming: 5 Quotes from Automakers About the Environment

By    |   Sunday, 22 Mar 2015 08:38 AM

Automakers play significant roles in improving the production and performance of their cars to deal with global warming issues. They not only design their own vehicles for energy efficiency, but also work with other companies and governments to achieve cleaner results for the environment.

Here are five quotes from automakers that confront the issues of climate change:

1. Major automakers teamed with various utilities companies under the Electric Power Research Institute to produce energy efficient cars. One of the projects includes simplifying and streamlining functions to maximize the performance of plug-in electric vehicles.

"This project is an important step in enabling plug-in vehicles to reach their potential as a valuable distributed resource that can increase grid stability, improve power quality and reduce demand peaks," commented Steven Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda. "Honda is participating in several projects aimed at accelerating vehicle-to-grid integration, which has the potential to reduce the total cost of owning a plug-in vehicle while enabling higher concentrations of renewable energy."

2. The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and CSR Europe organized an agreement among 14 global automakers for a set of standards that includes environmental issues.

“With a singularity of purpose and a common voice, the key players in our industry are collaboratively reinforcing the individual commitments each has made to doing business in a socially and environmental responsible way,” said J. Scot Sharland, executive director at AIAG, adding, “it’s imperative that we work together to develop, socialize and deploy industry best practices on a range of issues for our global supply chains.”

3. Improving the global environment brought together Japanese and Chinese automakers at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

“In order (for our cars) to contribute to China’s future, the key is environmental technologies,” said Yasumori Ihara, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Corp., as the company planned to produce key components for its hybrid vehicles in China.

4. At the same Beijing exhibition, Honda president Takanobu Ito addressed the stricter environmental controls facing Chinese automakers, saying hybrid vehicles “are the most suitable vehicles to deal with the country’s fuel consumption regulations that are expected to become stricter.”

5. A federal appeals court ruling in 2012 backed the regulation of greenhouse gases and requirements for vehicles by the Environmental Protection Agency to curb global warming effects.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers applauded the ruling, stating that “a single national fuel economy/carbon dioxide program is among our top policy priorities to avoid the chaos arising from several different regulatory bodies each setting their own standards.”
