Car-share services can cut down on the need for personal car use or even replace car ownership for many people. People can buy a share of vehicles they use when they need transportation. This has an overall impact on reducing global warming effects.

Car sharing programs are particularly beneficial in cities where residents rarely use a vehicle or only need one for a couple of hours a day. They are also used by businesses and organizations to save significantly on transportation costs.

Here are five ways car-share services may reduce greenhouse gases:

1. Car-share services significantly reduce traffic congestion to dramatically decrease overall greenhouse gas emissions. Services are often operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week to allow people access to cars anytime they choose. This cuts down on transportation costs and fuel usage because people use cars only when they need them. The cars can be reserved by the hour or day.

2. People think twice about using a car or taking so many trips when they can depend on car-share services. When they think about making an appointment or spending money for car sharing, they might decide the trip really isn't worth it. They use the cars only when necessary. Car sharing provides incentives for people to drive less,

3. As people depend more on car sharing, the manufacturing of automobiles will decrease. A study by AlixPartners suggests that for every vehicle used for a car-share service, automakers lose 32 vehicle sales. The demand drops, fewer vehicles are produced and fewer greenhouse gases are emitted into the air, according to Grist.

4. Parking spaces become plentiful with fewer cars on the road from car-share services. One vehicle now takes the place of several vehicles. Finding parking spaces, especially in crowded cities, increases gas emissions when people drive and idle their cars, looking for a space and releasing more greenhouse gases into the environment. With quicker times to find parking spots, the rate of emissions diminishes to decrease the effects of global warming.

5. Car-share services promote the use of more fuel-efficient vehicles most of the time, according to the RAND Corporation. The vehicles used in car-share services will most likely have the latest fuel-efficiency ratings. People involved in car sharing programs tend to avoid buying large vehicles, such as SUVs, which they would only use a few times a year in mountainous areas while spending the rest of the time driving through the streets and highways, releasing more greenhouse gases.
