While many major news organizations are speculating that Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will make a run for the U.S presidency in 2016, Jindal tells Politico he hasn’t yet decided whether he’ll make a bid for the White House. Jindal, 43, already has an extensive list of political accomplishments, however, with early supporters deeming him the “golden boy” and “rising star” of the Republican Party.

Here are eight facts about Jindal’s political background.

1. The Rhodes Scholar first arrived on the GOP radar, Esquire notes, when he was appointed secretary of the near-bankrupt Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals in 1996 at age 24 and slashed $400 million in Medicaid expenses. Jindal racked up more attention over the next several years serving as director of a bipartisan commission on Medicare, president of the University of Louisiana System, and assistant secretary of Health and Human Services.

2. In 2003, Jindal ran for governor of Louisiana for the first time on a staunchly conservative platform. He lost by just four percentage points during a runoff with Democratic candidate Kathleen Blanco.

3. Jindal parlayed that narrow defeat to a win in 2004 when he was elected to Congress. He was easily re-elected in 2006 and served on education, security, and resource committees during his tenures.

4. In keeping with party lines, the Christian husband and father of three has consistently voted against such things as abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell research. Jindal has voted in favor of gun rights and allowing teachers to discuss intelligent design theories along with evolution.

5. Jindal was elected governor of Louisiana in October 2007 after campaigning on ethics and tax reform. At 36, he became the youngest governor in U.S. history and the nation’s first Indian-American governor. He was re-elected in 2011.

6. Residents filed a recall petition against Jindal in 2008 after he refused to veto a bill that would double pay for state legislators. Jindal initially told media outlets he was against the raise, but didn’t want to intervene, The Times-Picayune reports. In the wake of the controversy, he soon vetoed the bill.

7. As governor, Jindal has focused on reforming education and health care. He created a school choice program, for example, and converted charity hospitals to public-private partnerships. He also tried to tackle tax reform, with a plan to ditch Louisiana’s income and corporate taxes in favor of hiking its sales tax. But opposition forced Jindal to abandon that proposal in 2013, the New York Times reports.

8. Jindal was widely panned after he delivered the Republican Party’s official response to President Barack Obama’s 2009 congressional address. Though the GOP doesn’t seem to be quite as enamored with Jindal as when he stormed onto the scene in 2003, The Times-Picayune cites recent polls that show he’s gaining support at home as he moves toward a decision about 2016.
