By    |   Friday, 26 Dec 2014 06:54 PM

In his more than half decade in active ministry, the Rev. Billy Graham has spoken often of the importance of family life and taking time out to nurture children in their adolescent years. Graham has made statements at his crusades, in media interviews and via his books.

1. In one of his many crusades from the 1980s, Graham discussed how important he views home and family life. He placed it on a pedestal higher than government.

“The family is the most important institution of the world,” Graham said at the crusade. “If the home goes, the nation is going to go.”

2. At that same crusade, Graham also implored attendees to consider their priorities.

“In the home, character is formed, integrity is born, values we live by are made clear and attitudes are formed that last a lifetime. Is your home built on a solid foundation?”

3. From his earliest days in ministry, Graham oftentimes trumpeted the importance of maintaining relationships.

“The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one's life, but rather a legacy of character and faith,” Graham once said in a widely circulated quote.

4. Viewing home life through the lens of society in general, Graham once stated, “A child who is allowed to be disrespectful to his parents will not have true respect for anyone.”

5. In a similar quote, Graham commented: “Only God Himself fully appreciates the influence of a Christian mother in the molding of character in her children.”

6. Cultivating his commentary from Scripture, Graham also has stated the importance of unconditional love in a widely circulated quote that incorporates elements of 1 Corinthians: “Nothing can bring a real sense of security into the home except true love.”

7. In a 2008 Q&A interview with Christianity Today, Graham spoke directly of his own family relationships as he approached his 90th birthday. At the time, he had been widowed for a year, as his longtime wife, Ruth Bell Graham, had died.

“I do have visitors from time to time, when my strength allows,” Graham said in the interview. “My family is very good about visiting me, and other friends as well.”

8. hroughout his ministry, Graham also has spoken more broadly on the concept of family — particularly when he is speaking of relationships and their importance in a Christian’s life.

“God is more interested in your future and your relationships than you are,” Graham stated at a crusade.

9. While Graham speaks often of home life within the context of earth, he obviously has a longer view in mind.

“My home is in Heaven,” Graham once stated in an interview. “I'm just traveling through this world.”
