Allen West 2016: What 5 Leading Pundits Say About Potential GOP Presidential Hopeful

By    |   Tuesday, 10 Feb 2015 03:17 PM

Allen West, a former Florida congressman, is third-generation military, a self-proclaimed American success story, and now one of many potential GOP presidential hopefuls for the 2016 election.

He served as a U.S. representative from 2011 to 2012, losing his re-election to Democrat Patrick Murphy in 2012.

West is an outspoken Republican, popular with the Tea Party movement, and known for unapologetically blunt public comments.

Here are what five leading pundits have to say about potential the 2016 GOP presidential hopeful:

1. “He had used up his welcome in Florida. He wasn't going to get elected to anything here. So there was no real political benefit to him staying here," said Nova Southeastern University history and legal studies professor Charles Zelden, who specializes in politics and voting. He was referring to West’s move to Texas and out of Florida in 2015.

"What happens to politicians when they've used up their welcome is they go on to get jobs either on TV or in think tanks," Zelden told the Sun Sentinel.

West has done both.

2. “I just don't see how Colonel West clinches the nomination with so many talented candidates in the mix. The safer bet is that either Cruz or Paul will be conservatives' top choice. Then again, the field is wide open — and who knows what the future might bring,” wrote Town Hall deputy editor Daniel Doherty.

Doherty cited a crowded field of likely more popular candidates, many of whom are also affiliated with the Tea Party movement, as a reason West may not be the top choice.

3. “Allen West may be highly educated, he may be a decorated war veteran, he may be a devoted family man, he may be a courageous black man who identifies as a conservative, he may be better than all the Democrats in Congress, but he is still a Tea Party statist,” said Laurence M. Vance, of the Tenth Amendment Center.

4. In 2012, around the time of West’s re-election campaign, Armstrong Williams wrote on The Hill, “While some might think that it might be better to have someone safe, someone timid, in such an environment, I disagree wholeheartedly. It is precisely in such tight races that we need someone who can motivate the base to show up on Election Day, and someone who can get people excited. If GOP candidates don’t look any different from the Democrats, what would be the point of voting for them?”

5. In an editorial for Pundit Press, Josh Bernstein, a political writer and talk show host, wrote of West as a presidential hopeful for 2016, “He is a solid conservative with a ton of much needed military experience. He is bold, smart, and very knowledgeable of foreign affairs. He has never wavered or buckled from political pressure and has remained a true conservative throughout his time in Congress.”

Bernstein said West would at the very least be his first choice for vice president.
