Alabama is a great place for a family vacation or staycation. Whether your interests lie in the natural beauty of our land, the heights of space travel, or the historical struggle of Civil War and Civil Rights in this country the state has something to offer.

Here are 7 spots not to miss if your family vacation or staycation takes you to the Heart of Dixie:

1. U.S. Space & Rocket Center: This attraction combines the history of space travel with a little bit of the thrill. In Huntsville, it is a great family vacation or staycation experience with something for both kids and parents. Visitors can learn about the science behind space travel, get a feeling for the sheer size of the vehicles that travel to space and have a chance to feel the thrill of space travel with a ride on the Space-Shot or the G-Force accelerator.

2. Noccalula Falls: Noccalula Falls Park features a 90-foot waterfall and a 250 acre public park. The beautiful spot in Gadsden is listed on the Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Families will like the natural beauty but also get the chance to visit a pioneer homestead, petting zoo and a mini-golf course. Plan your family vacation or staycation at the right time of year and you will get the chance to see the park's botanical garden abloom with 25,000 azaleas.

3. Civil War Battlefields: Alabama is the Heart of Dixie and that means an extensive Civil War History. At Fort Blakely in Blakely State Park, your family can visit the site of the final major battle of the war. Here you can take boat and walking tours of the Bottle Creek Indian Mound. There are many re-enactments of war battles performed annually at the Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury, a site of a museum with extensive war memorabilia and was the site of the state's only Confederate veterans home.

4. Confederate History: Alabama was the capitol of the Confederate States of America. In Montgomery visitors can tour the Confederate White House and the Museum of the Confederacy, as well as a restored state capitol.

5. Civil Rights: Alabama is also the home of Civil Rights. To walk the path of this struggle, start at the National Voting Rights Museum in Selma. This museum tells the story about the brave people who stood up for change in our nation, for women's rights and the right for all to freely vote. Here you can also walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and learn about how voting rights turned to violence in the 1960s.

6. Visit the Bus: Go The Rosa Parks Museum at the Troy University campus in Montgomery tells the story of the day a woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus began a movement to end segregation.

7. Visit the Gulf Shore: For a relaxed way to enjoy the sun and fun head to the gulf shore of Alabama. Plan this family vacation or staycation spot as a part of your journey, but don't forget to visit the U.S.S. Alabama at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile. Here you can also see the USS DRUM, a submarine and a variety of other aircraft and military equipment on the grounds of this park. There is also a nice place to have a picnic.
