The Al Gore global warming movie “An Inconvenient Truth” received widespread critical acclaim in 2006. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded it two Oscars — Best Documentary and Best Original Song. The movie also won the Best Documentary category from the American Cinema Editors Guild.

According to Metacritic.com, which pulls together a consensus of movie reviews, the Al Gore global warming movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” received “generally favorable reviews.”  This opinion was formed after a compilation of 32 critic reviews of the movie.

The movie got four stars and a “thumb up” from Roger Ebert. While the critic admitted other people expected it to be boring, the topic and Gore’s delivery were anything but, he wrote, “This is not a boring film.” Then in a ringing endorsement of the movie Ebert wrote,

“In 39 years, I have never written these words in a movie review, but here they are: 'You owe it to yourself to see this film. If you do not, an you have grandchildren, you should explain to them why you decided not to.'"

Ebert admits that he cannot provide an unbiased review because the topic is one he also believes in strongly. However, this mainstream movie reviewer also said the Al Gore global warming movie was, "fascinating and relentless.”

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Mick LaSalle thought the movie very effectively told the story of global warming and its effects. He wrote, “Virtually everyone who sees this movie will be galvanized to do something about global warming.” LaSalle noted that Al Gore comes across in the movie as more likable than he was as a political persona.

Peter Rainer
, a film critic for the Christian Science Monitor, acknowledges the controversy the movie stirred up, but still manages to give it a ringing endorsement. Rainer wrote the “slickly produced chronicle” directed by Davis Guggenheim that became the Al Gore global warming movie, has a “cumulative force.”
