Wyoming offers some of the best adventure travel opportunities in the United States, according to national and international publications. Here are five of that state’s top destinations for thrill-seekers:

1. Yellowstone National Park

U.S. News and World Report ranked Yellowstone as the nation’s third best destination for adventure travel, describing it as an “outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.” The site spoke enthusiastically of the park’s forests, trails, geysers, hot springs, wildlife-watching opportunities, and unspoiled natural beauty. It indicated the park sees 3 million visitors a year but added that tourists – unless they visit the geyser known as Old Faithful – likely won’t see many other people, as the park’s 2.2 million acres offer “plenty of untouched territory to explore.”

2. Jackson Hole

U.S. News and World Report ranked Jackson Hole as the nation’s 10th best destination to “take a walk on the wild side,” stressing that it offers adventure year-round. The site said: “In winter and early spring, ski resorts boast plenty of powder. In the warmer months, kayaking or hiking in Grand Teton National Park is a must. And in the fall, visit the National Elk Refuge to hear the bugle calls of its residents.”

Jackson Hole was described by Destination360 as “the premiere destination for skiing in the United States,”

3. Grand Teton

National Geographic listed scaling Wyoming's 13,770-foot Grand Teton as being among the 25 “best adventure travel trips” worldwide and said the climb has long been a rite of passage for beginning multipitch climbers seeking to take their skills to the next level.

“Combined with nearby 12,325-foot Teewinot and 12,928-foot Mount Owen, the Grand becomes what Exum Mountain Guides senior guide Mark Newcomb calls ‘some of the best continuous climbing and scrambling in the lower 48.’”

4. Devils Tower

Devils Tower National Monument is one of the premiere climbing destinations in the United States. Stewart Green, a rock climber and guidebook author, called the tower a “magnet” for climbers who come to ascend it using any of 150 routes.

The famous and distinctive natural landmark rises 867 feet from its base and is recognizable to millions for the role it played in the 1977 movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Nearly 5,000 people a year climb the tower, according to the Devils Tower Natural History Association.

5. Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail
The Wyoming Office of Tourism said the 270-mile Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail — ranked as one of the best such trails in the west by SnoWest magazine — begins in Lander, traverses western Wyoming, and ends in Grand Teton National Park.

“Trailblazers revel in majestic views of the Tetons, and experienced riders love heading off-trail for challenging terrain,” the office said.
