The pregnancy-terminating RU-486 medication, aka "The Abortion Pill," remains the most effective medical way to end pregnancies of seven to nine weeks.

According to a report by the American Journal of Public Health, half of U.S. pregnancies are unintentional, and 40 percent of these are aborted. Further, the Guttmacher Institute, which specializes in reproductive health, says that nearly 53 million legal abortions have occurred from 1973-2011. In 1973, the Supreme Court made its landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

The Institute points out that just 13 states have abortion laws that favor women, an unkind stat for the one out of every three women who will have an abortion in her lifetime.
