Boston Bombing Response Earns Praise

By    |   Wednesday, 24 Apr 2013 10:18 AM

If there's a silver lining to the terrorism in Boston, it's how Americans responded.

The response to the Boston Marathon bombing deserves praise.

The second-guessing is already intense, such as whether the FBI missed early warnings. And the blame-America crowd is already crowing out its blather. But let’s not jump past the deserved praise for all who performed so admirably. They deserve that we pause and reflect and thank them.

At the bombing scene, even before the smoke could clear, medical personnel swooped in, joined by everyday citizens who aided the police, first responders, and other security people.

Teams of investigators quickly tackled the tedious work of finding clues in the rubble and reviewing a mountain of videos and photos, straining to pick out the suspects from a huge crowd of runners and spectators. Within 15 minutes they started securing videos from the fixed cameras in the area and they kept asking for more.

Investigators stayed focused — even as the media scurried to describe one false angle and then another, and while reporters issued politically correct cautions.

Investigators kept quiet until they had something concrete. That’s why their announcement and unveiling of photos had impact. It quickly flushed the suspects from cover, but unfortunately launching even more deadly violence as they emerged.

The citizen cooperation was incredible in accepting a shutdown and curfew. That allowed the massive manhunt to focus on the remaining suspect, find him and overwhelm him. Police and other law enforcement were admirable in their professionalism and diligence. Then, in true American fashion, doctors were willing to save the life even of a terrorist. Then interrogators could take over.

Throughout it all: For the victims, massive voluntary contributions are flooding in to help them.

Let’s hope we now can unravel this terrorist plot wherever it leads, and do that unraveling with the same level of expertise that we witnessed last week.

Whether the bombers acted as a two-man team or as part of a larger group, their ideology made them a threat to us all. Political correctness did not hamper the work last week. But now it will take public insistence to keep the PC crowd at bay as the probe continues.
