Al Gore Slams Bush in Fundraising Appeal

"George W. Bush doesn’t care what you and I think and neither do his friends in Congress.”

That’s how Al Gore begins an Internet appeal sent to supposed Democratic supporters, seeking to raise money for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

"The American people overwhelmingly want our troops out of Iraq,” the e-mail continues. "They want the federal government to take real and immediate action to combat global warming and to significantly expand support for stem cell research . . .

"Nowhere has Republican obstruction been more blatant and more damaging than in the United States Senate, where they’ve exploited the narrow 51-49 Democratic majority to try to block all manner of legislation. If we want progress on the issues we care about, we absolutely must expand the Democratic Senate majority in 2008.”

The former vice president says the DSCC needs to raise $500,000 to reach a June 30 quarterly fundraising deadline.

In 2008, 12 Democrats are up for re-election in the Senate, as are 20 Republicans.

Gore concludes: "It is easy to lay the blame for much of what has transpired the last six years at the feet of George W. Bush.

"But it’s important to remember that he couldn’t have done much of his damage without a supine Republican congress. And it’s important for all of us to remember that the very same Republican senators who have failed us so badly in the past are poised to once again be in the majority if they pick up only one seat in the next election. We can’t let that happen.”
