Viet Vet Ad Challenges Kerry Medals

A group of Vietnam veterans who served with John Kerry have produced a television ad that says he lied about the circumstances of at least two of the combat medals he won in Vietnam.

Parts of the devastating spot debuted last night on the Fox News Channel and MSNBC, showing Kerry's "band of brothers" denouncing him as a "liar."

"I know John Kerry is lying about his first Purple Heart because I treated him for that injury," says Lewis Letson, the Navy medic who treated Kerry in December 1969.

Letson has told interviewers that the injury, which earned the top Democrat his first of three Purple Hearts, was nothing more than a "Band-Aid" flesh wound.

"John Kerry lied to get his Bronze Star. ... I know. I was there. I saw what happened," says fellow Kerry vet Van O'Dell.

Others vets featured in the spot contend:

  • "John Kerry has not been honest. And he lacks the capacity to lead. ..."

  • "When the chips were down, you could not count on John Kerry. John Kerry is no war hero."

  • "He betrayed all his shipmates, he lied before the Senate."

The ad, paid for with money raised by the vets themselves, is set to run in the key battleground states of Wisconsin, Ohio and West Virginia.
