1. Robert Redford's Watergate Sightings

The way Robert Redford sees it, Watergate "is happening every day."

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Redford predictably pointed out similarities between Nixon's cover-up and the so-called secretive nature of the Bush administration.

"It's pretty transparent; it's not something you have to reach for or exaggerate," Redford opines. "You can go right down the list ... of things like Watergate happening almost on a regular basis with this particular administration."

Redford played the character of Bob Woodward in the movie "All the President's Men" some 30 years ago. Ever since then "old media" reporters have sought his supposed wisdom on the subject.

The Left Coast Report thinks seeking out Redford for his expertise on Watergate is like seeking out Heath Ledger for his expertise on pup tents.

2. Alec Baldwin's Loathsome Blog

Remember when Alec Baldwin promised to move out of the country if Bush were elected in 2000? Or when on national television in 1998 he advocated stoning Congressman Henry Hyde and his family to death?

Well now, in the midst of the war on terror, Baldwin has referred to the sitting vice president as a terrorist.

In a recent post on Arianna Huffington's Web site, Baldwin wrote, "[Dick] Cheney is a terrorist. He terrorizes our enemies abroad and innocent citizens here at home indiscriminately."

After musing about whether a civil suit will arise out of the now over-reported hunting accident, Baldwin added, "Finally, someone who might get that lying, thieving Cheney into a courtroom to answer some direct questions."

The Left Coast Report acknowledges that the guy is a gifted actor but wonders if he's really auditioning for Howard Dean's gig.

3. Richard Dreyfuss Denies He's a Liberal

Richard Dreyfuss recently found a way to draw some big attention to himself: Take to the liberal podium and start bashing President Bush.

It seems the celebrity spotlight-getter works every time it's tried these days.

Since it's been a while since Dreyfuss has landed a role in a major motion picture it's sort of understandable that he would seek publicity. Somehow, though, I don't think Mr. Holland would approve of the actor's unscholarly approach.

Dreyfuss recently made a speech at the same venue where Tim Robbins gave his "chill wind blowing in America" rant a while back: the National Press Club.

"There are causes worth fighting for even if you know that you will lose," Dreyfuss explained.

"Unless you are willing to accept torture as part of a normal American political lexicon, unless you are willing to accept that leaving the Geneva Convention is fine and dandy, if you accept the expansion of wiretapping as business as usual, the only way to express this now is to embrace the difficult and perhaps embarrassing process of impeachment," the actor added.

In addition to informing the press and the world that torture is the norm in the United States and our nation has left the Geneva Convention, Dreyfuss announced that he is not a liberal but instead is a "libo-conservo-middle-of-the-roado," something that he has apparently been for "many years."

From the looks of things, Dreyfuss doesn't believe in treating President Bush in a "middle-of-the-roado" manner, having called him in 2004 "arrogant and incompetent" and "the enemy of thoughtfulness."

Perhaps more strikingly "libo" than "conservo" is the fact that over the last decade and a half Dreyfuss gave more than $30,000 to fellow "middle-of-the-roados" Carl Levin, Charles Schumer, Patrick Leahy, Al Gore and Barbara Boxer, among others, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Incidentally, Dreyfuss has a film scheduled to come out soon. It's the remake of "The Poseidon Adventure."

The Left Coast Report guesses he's seeking a comeback with a shipwreck.

4. George Clooney 'Jokes'

"Who would name their kid Jack with the last words 'off' at the end of your last name? No wonder that guy is screwed up," George Clooney wisecracked to an international audience at the recent Golden Globes awards show.

The joke drew the ire of Jack Abramoff's father, Frank, who didn't find it funny at all. The senior Abramoff wrote a letter to The Desert Sun newspaper calling Clooney's barb a "glib and ridiculous" attack.

In a recent appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live," King asked Clooney whether he would apologize for the ill-conceived joke he made while accepting a Best Supporting Actor for his "Syriana" flick, the film that shows the softer side of terrorism.

"I make no apologies for that - it was a joke," Clooney told King. "Believe me," the actor added, "the person who's disparaged the Abramoff name is not me."

Clooney didn't just joke about accused lobbyist Jack Abramoff. He targeted his parents. Since when are someone's folks fair game?

The Left Coast Report doesn't recall hearing an apology coming out of Clooney's mouth after he joked about Charlton Heston being stricken with Alzheimer's either.

5. Bono to Donate His Guitar to Brazil's Hunger Campaign

In stark contrast to the above four actors, rocker and lobbyist Bono is using his celebrity status to help others.

According to Agencia Brasil, Bono will donate one of his guitars to benefit Brazil's Zero Hunger campaign. The guitar will be auctioned off after U2's concerts in Sao Paulo's Morumbi soccer stadium.

The Brazilian initiative seeks to provide all Brazilians with three meals a day by the end of the year.

The Left Coast Report may not agree with all of Bono's politics but can appreciate his positive use of celebrity power.
