NRA Sticker Is No Reason for Cops to Search Truck, Court Rules
Melanie Hunter, CNSNews.com
Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002
A National Rifle Association sticker on the window did not give police "probable cause" to search a man's pickup truck in a Dallas suburb, a federal appeals court ruled.

"Indeed, if the presence of an NRA sticker and camouflage gear in a vehicle could be used by an officer to conclude he was in danger, half the pickups in the state of Texas would be subject to a vehicle search," a panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a 2-1 decision in New Orleans.

Police found a loaded pistol in the truck they stopped and searched, and the truck's owner sued on the grounds that the search was illegal. The man had been stopped for speeding in Garland, Tex., wire reports said Tuesday.
