Hail Zogby – And Beware Reno!
John LeBoutillier
Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000
Thoughts on three hours of sleep: John Zogby has been vindicated. His polls were uncannily accurate state by state and nationally. He was by far the most accurate pollster. And I am proud to have used his polls as a basis for my analysis. All those of you who bragged that Bush would win in a huge blowout – including winning big in California and Florida" – were way, way off!

Florida: Bush is inches ahead, but as I warned last week in "Close Enough To Steal," the conditions exist for the Democrats to make their move now in Florida. The Florida attorney general, Butterworth, is also Gore’s Florida campaign chairman. Uh oh! That should be worrisome. But, even worse, you just know that the U.S. Justice Department will be in there in a hot minute. And guess who is from Florida – and heads the Justice Department? Janet Reno!

After the way she manipulated things in the Elian case and basically defied the federal court in Atlanta, I put nothing beyond Reno and company.

Plus the testy exchange at 4 a.m. between W and Gore – "Don’t get snippy with me" – probably has emboldened Gore to fight on, pushing the recount, court challenges, appeals, etc.

Also, the fact that Gore has won the national popular vote will also embolden him to fight on.

Also, the news that the Senate is 50-50 means that the newly elected president and vice president are also going to run the Senate!

Wow!!!

Other thoughts: the TV networks are a disgrace with the "calling" and then withdrawing the call. They all conspired in a huge, multi-network ‘Richard Jewell moment’!

From now on, here is what ought to happen: Can the exit polls and don’t "call" anything until 100 percent of the vote in each state is counted. Period!

As for Hillary, GOP heads should roll here in New York. She was going to lose until the New York state GOP ran 500,000 phone calls linking her to the USS Cole bombing. That killed Lazio.

Governor Pataki should be hanged for allowing this. He and his hand-picked state party boss, Bill Powers, must pay for this travesty. These two come from the Al D’Amato school of nasty attack politics. That stuff is disgraceful and malicious – and it backfired ‘big time.’ Powers should immediately be fired. And Pataki can’t lose soon enough in 2002 if you ask me. To hell with him; he has saddled the nation with years more of the Clintons!

And all the GOP governors proved to be a bust for Bush! Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin – and not one went for Bush! What a pathetic showing for these over-hyped, egomaniacal governors!

Looking at the overall result, it is the judgment of the American people that the status quo remain. Neither Bush nor Gore nor the narrowly reconstituted Republican House and Senate have any mandate to do anything. The people want things to stay as they are. And that is what will happen – until the economy deteriorates or a crisis develops overseas.
