Gore Makes Small Gains in 'Rigged' Recounts

Al Gore has trimmed George W. Bush's lead in the Florida popular vote to 731 on the strength of unofficial manual recounts in three Democrat-dominated counties. Republicans are charging that those recounts are "rigged."

Gore has gained 69 votes in Miami-Dade County, 127 in Broward County and just three in Palm Beach County, according to the Associated Press.

There are thousands of disputed votes remaining to be counted in each county, however, and all three counties have significant numbers of precincts still to be counted.

Republicans are exposing accusations of vote tampering. "This thing is rigged," said Rep. David Hobson, R-Ohio. "It is a joke on our democracy."

Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., called the vote gains "manufactured" and compared election officials roaming the counting room to "pit bosses."
