Twitter Lynch Mob Calls for Zimmerman's Death

Monday, 23 Apr 2012 02:52 PM

Twitter message boards were full of calls to kill Trayvon Martin shooter George Zimmerman on Monday, just hours after he was released on $150,000 bail.

At least one tweet — on a website that specifically tells users, “You may not publish or post direct, specific threats of violence against others" — also called for Judge Kenneth Lester, who freed Zimmerman, to be murdered.

Typical of the 140-character-or-less messages on Twitter was one from a woman calling herself “Chatia” from Boston. “Someone pass me a gun, imma go follow zimmerman, shoot, and kill him and say #imstandingmyground,” she wrote.

Chatia’s profile picture is of a young, black woman.

WillFolarinMawana, whose picture shows a dreadlocked young man in sunglasses, wrote, “George Zimmerman Released From Jail 150,000 Bail! WTF!” The poster then added a racial epithet before adding, “You Are About To Die, Start Writing Your Will! Justices Has Not Been Served.”

User MsLovely seemed unable to grasp the concept of bail, writing “Once u been convicted of a crime & let out on bail u can't be charged 2x for the same thing so that means sum1 gonna have to kill Zimmerman.”

A poster called “Yes its Zain” from Los Angeles, said simply, “Lets kill #zimmerman,” while “Jawan’s girlfriend” posted “I think imma personally kill George Zimmerman . . . anyone's welcome to join” She later insisted she had not made the post and asked Twitter to take it down.

But it was not just Zimmerman, who has admitted he pulled the trigger when 17-year-old Martin was shot dead on Feb. 26, who was under threat.
A message from a poster called Rick_Cobain said “Zimmerman released from jail someone kill the judge!!!!!” The tweet was apparently later taken down, but the Weekly Standard reported it had been retweeted at least 25 times.
