Mitt Romney is badly trailing President Barack Obama in his race for the White House because “he lacks a national message of change,” Democratic political consultant Doug Schoen tells Newsmax.TV.

“People do believe that the president has failed to deliver. They don’t believe he’s done enough for the economy,” Schoen, the former pollster for President Bill Clinton, tells Newsmax in an exclusive interview. “They’re not really convinced they are better off, but they don’t necessarily believe that Gov. Romney, at this point, represents a credible alternative.

“Until the governor outlines a program and offers the possibility, the hope and the specificity that will give people confidence that change will come if Romney’s elected, Obama will continue to be in the lead.”

Schoen, a Newsmax contributor, said that Obama is “the favorite” in the White House sweepstakes.

“The odds makers are giving him a two-thirds or better chance to win — and that’s fair now, with a big ‘but.’ “We’ve got the debates coming up. There are three of them. The first one is obviously of preeminent importance.

“Gov. Romney needs to change the dynamic, and change the dynamic boldly, if he’s going to have a chance to win this election,” Schoen said.

The president is also leading in five of the six key battleground states, too.

“Florida, slight Barack Obama advantage,” Schoen began. “Ohio, decisive, bigger than five-point Barack Obama advantage. Virginia, three or four points Barack Obama. North Carolina, even, probably a slight advantage to Gov. Romney. Nevada, Barack Obama lead. Colorado, a point or two Obama lead but within the margin of error.

“Taking that all together, you net that out. That produces probably between 275 and 300, 310 electoral votes for Barack Obama. Enough to reelect him as president.”

And, yes, the clandestine video of the former Massachusetts governor saying that 47 percent of Obama’s supporters believe they are victims, has devastated the Republican challenger’s campaign.

“Boy, it did, “Schoen said. “We’re one nation — and President Obama is wrong to say that by taxing the rich, somehow, that will solve our problems.

“Also, it’s a misnomer to say that the 47 percent who don’t pay federal income tax are somehow all dependent. I don’t believe they are all dependent. A large percentage of them are lower income Americans who work, they pay payroll taxes, they pay Social Security taxes and, bottom line, they’re hard-working Americans.

“Retired people, students with loans,” Schoen added. “Those are, again, people who we are investing in and giving our best shot to. I don’t see those people as dependents, though, certainly, a substantial percentage of them benefit from the federal government.”

But it’s not too late for the Romney campaign to bounce back and take the White House, Schoen said.

“Not by a long shot. We have those three debates. We have 43 days left in the campaign and, bottom line, that’s more than enough time.

“But this is not about shoe leather,” Schoen added. “It’s about message. The governor needs to have a national message of change that rebuts, compellingly, what Obama has been arguing. If he can do that, he still has a chance to win.”
