Democratic State Sen. Barbara Buono, who lost to Chris Christie in the New Jersey governor's race and was secretly mocked by his staff, says the Garden State's top lawmaker runs his office like a "paramilitary" organization.

"When I first heard about the closure of the lanes going over the [George Washington Bridge] back in early September, I knew what had happened because I know how this governor operates," Buono told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"He runs his administration like a very tightly disciplined organization, top-down, very paramilitary. So, I knew that nothing goes on without him knowing. People don't go to the bathroom without asking him first," she said Monday.

Story continues below video.

Last week, it emerged that Christie's top staffers had ordered the closure of lanes that lead to the bridge in retaliation for the mayor of Fort Lee not endorsing Christie's re-election. The closure triggered four days of intensive traffic jams and stalled emergency vehicles.

Christie, who fired his top aide and has seen other top staffers resign, insists he was betrayed and lied to and knew nothing about the alleged payback plot. In one staff email, a Christie ally mocked "children of Buono voters" being stuck in traffic.

Buono does not believe in Christie's self-proclaimed innocence and welcomes the investigations into Bridge-gate that are under way.

"It's very important to the people of New Jersey, because it's not just about a bridge closing," she said.

"It's about thwarting democracy . . . There's so many unanswered questions."
