Santorum to Newsmax: Strike Iran Before It Has Nuclear Weapons

Monday, 27 Feb 2012 05:05 PM

By Jim Meyers and Kathleen Walter

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum says the United States must be prepared to use missile strikes and air strikes against the Iranians if they continue their nuclear weapons development program.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV on the eve of the Michigan and Arizona primaries, Santorum was asked what actions he would take today to address the Iranian nuclear threat.

“I would work hand in glove with the Israelis trying to discern the state of the Iranian nuclear program and then I would take actions accordingly,” he says.

“Imposing sanctions on their oil program, I would have done that a long time ago, but I’m glad President Obama has finally gotten around to it even though he seemingly still hesitates and shows himself uncomfortable. He was sort of forced into doing that by Congress.

“I think we also need to work with the pro-democracy movement in Iran. It is vibrant. It is being oppressed by the regime, and we have an obligation to support them as best we can. We are doing nothing to help them as far as I can see.

“Ultimately we need to make the case to the Iranian regime that we will not let them get a nuclear weapon, and that means working with the Israelis if necessary, and coordinating missile strikes or air strikes to take out that capability if we believe it’s reached that point.”
