The most recent family trouble started for congressional hopeful Mark Sanford on the night he won the GOP nomination, The Washington Post reports
The former South Carolina governor’s marriage ended after word leaked of an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman.
Sanford’s wife told the Post that their teenage son, Bolton, unexpectedly met the woman, Maria Belen Chapur, for the first time when Sanford put them both onstage with him on April 2 when he won the nomination for Congress.
“That was indeed Bolton’s first intro and both boys were quite upset and visibly so,” Jenny Sanford said in a text message to the Post on Wednesday.
The National Republican Congressional Committee announced earlier Wednesday that it would not spend additional money to support Sanford’s bid for Congress. That announcement came after news that Jenny Sanford had filed a court complaint accusing the ex-governor of trespassing into her home.
Mark Sanford responded that he went to his wife's home while she was not there to watch the Super Bowl with his son.
A committee spokeswoman says Mark Sanford has proven he knows what it takes to win elections, but that the group won't be engaged in the contest.
