A Colorado bill granting same-sex couples some of the same rights as marriage drew ire from conservatives at a public hearing Monday, the Denver Post reported Tuesday. The state’s Senate Judiciary Committee moved the measure forward Monday after hearing testimony.

Rosina Kovar of Denver, who said she was speaking on behalf of herself and her grandchildren, vehemently opposed the measure, and asked the panel to vote it down. "I think we ought to be telling the truth about fornication and sodomy," she said.

Republican Kevin Lundberg of Berthoud sits on the committee and voted against the measure. He was successful in his attempt in 2006 to get voters to outlaw same-sex marriage. The civil-unions bill is an attempt to simulate marriage, he said.

"It is as close to marriage as can be construed in Colorado law without using that word," he said.

The measure is expected to pass the Democrat-controlled state Senate, but its passage in the Republican-controlled House is less certain.
