It makes sense that Republican voters would visit the website RomneyRyan.com expecting to see official information about the Republican presidential ticket.
But that’s not what they’ll get. RomneyRyan.com is owned by a Ron Paul supporter who’s looking to cash in on his good fortune, Politico
The owner is Peter Crowley of New York City, who works for a computer-related company that he declined to identify.
“I registered the domain name back in 2010 when I first heard Mr. Ryan speak,” Crowley told Politico. “He seemed like he was someone who would be in the Republican spotlight . . . I thought he was a likely candidate.”
To be sure, Crowley hedged his bets, purchasing 70 web page permutations of the Republican ticket, including ones with Newt Gingrich as presidential nominee. Crowley said he has been offered up to $3,000 for his Internet address, but is waiting for more.
He has contacted both the Romney and Obama campaigns, as well as the Republican and Democratic National Committees. “I haven’t had any response,” Crowley said
He says he’s prepared to just auction the site off soon if he doesn’t receive an attractive bid. “This is new territory for me, so I’m not really sure what it’s worth. But I’m thinking at least $10,000.”
The site now consists of a link to “view Mitt Romney’s tax returns,” tweaking the candidate for declining to reveal his tax information from before 2010 and 2011. “It’s a little satirical jab,” said Crowley. “I figured, might as well make a joke out of it. I’m not looking to make Mitt Romney look good for free.”
