The Romney campaign announced Friday that it will use the “Square” device to allow donations to be processed through smart phones, starting at next week’s convention.

When a Square is attached to a smart phone, a credit or debit card can be swiped through it, allowing the payment to be processed through the network on the phone.

Delegates and convention visitors will be able to buy souvenirs as well as make campaign donations via smart phone at the Tampa confab next week.

"We are excited to be the first presidential campaign to make serious use of Square devices at a major event like a national convention." Zac Moffatt, digital director of the Romney campaign, said in a statement. "More importantly, we are excited to empower a national grassroots movement by providing each attendee the ability to take their Square devices back to their home state and engage with their communities."

It’s been a big week for mobile devices on the campaign trail. The Obama campaign announced Thursday that it has begun accepting text-message donations.
