Comments made by GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney about the current turmoil in the Mideast are earning negative marks from the public. Some 48 percent disapprove of his comments compared to just 26 percent that approve, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

The survey also found that the public approved of President Barack Obama’s handling the crisis by a 45 percent to 36 percent margin.

Romney was roundly criticized for his remarks about the protests in Egypt and Libya where four people, including the U.S. ambassador, were killed. Romney criticized the administration for what he said were apologies issued in the wake of the Cairo protests.

The poll of 1,001 adults conducted Sept. 13 through 16 found that 43 percent of Americans have followed the news about the attack very closely, making it the most closely followed foreign story of the year.

Americans disapproval of Romney’s comments and approval of Obama’s handling of the crisis spans a wide range of demographics including men, women, and young and old.
